The importance of the introduction in the works
Research papers have a certain structure that helps organize their content and makes it more digestible by those who will become readers of it. The introduction is one of those parts and has a relevant importance in the whole structure because it is the cover letter of what will be achieved inside.
The introduction to a work is the part in charge of showing the reader an appetizer of what the subject will deal with and will guide on its internal content. It is of key importance in any type of work because it contextualizes and guides the reader to a better understanding of the research and its results.
Types of introductions
Although we usually classify only one type of text as an introduction, there are actually at least 3 that serve similar purposes and that can all coexist within the same work or not, it all depends on its specifications.
In the first instance there is the prologue, which is a text that narrates in the first person what the reader is going to achieve within the work. It is usually used, especially in specialized content such as books.
The presentation is another way of introducing the content of a paper and is often used as a method to thank the people who contributed to its realization.
The introduction as such, what it refers to in its content, is a clear summary of what will be inside the work. People usually talk about what inspired the topic and the scope it will have. You may also touch on some background that is relevant to understanding the inner purpose.
Finally, the preface is an introductory part that works in literature and that the authors use to say something that has to do with the plot of the text but that is not part of the chapters that make up the work as such.
Functions of an introduction
With all these details we can establish that an introduction does not have a single function, but rather fulfills different purposes at the same time:
- It helps the reader to locate himself in the topic and the context to work. This is a very important step so that the reader is in tune and it becomes much easier for him to assimilate the information that he will find inside.
- It presents the reader with the style and the thought that weaves the whole internal idea. With the introduction, the writer of the work introduces himself and indicates, in some way, what has moved him to do that work and what he thinks about it. It is very important to choose the appropriate words.
- Create an easy-to-follow path that leads from the general topic to the particular. This path helps the reader to easily understand the bulk of the content. It is important that it is used wisely because it must be a concise and clear text, generally of few pages.
- It makes the reader even more interested in the rest of the work. Of course, for this to really be the case, the introduction must be written in an attractive way, placing striking data or questions that establish a kind of dialogue with the reader so that they are motivated to continue reading.
- It allows to fix position and generate confidence on the validity of the internal text. By speaking with confidence in the introduction, the reader will be able to start the rest of the reading knowing that what is inside is well established and framed in a series of relevant data because that is how it has been implied in said text.
One last point that is very important to know is that the introductions are recommended to be written at the end of all the work, since this way there will be a more exact reference of all the content and the data provided in this part will be clearer.
